LittleDog robot takes its first steps, imitates older brother

Following in the footsteps of the disconcerting BigDog robot and the slither tracks of the Robot Snake, here’s the LittleDog. Gone is the chainsaw-like whining of this pup’s pony-sized and scary older brother. Instead, there’s a cute determination that makes you want to root for the little whippersnapper.

Check out the videos documenting the LittleDog’s progress, watching the way the leggy robot figures out how to cross a barrier. These bug-like bots are getting smart, able to tentatively negotiate a series of pegs. We’re especially amused by the real dog looking on, convinced that he’s looking at something that’s alive:
