Philips releases latest Xenium K700 a PMP and Mobile phone
Sep 27th
As one would expect from the entertainment giants that they are, Philips has added a touch of their brilliant entertainment features to the Xenium K700. It looks a lot like a MP4 player rather than a phone with the sexy 2.9 inch TFT touch screen taking up a major portion of the phone. It’s also got a 3.2 megapixel camera, 40 MB internal memory with microSD expansion to 8 GB, Bluetooth, USB, radio with RDS, 3.5 mm audio jack and even a GPU! The works! The phone will support DivX, FLV and AVI among other formats.
This totally reminds me of a PMP.
The Philips Xenium K700 will support up to 4 hours of video playback and 25 hours of audio playback, before the juice runs out. Pricing and availability will soon have numbers and dates near them, for now, there’s not much.
Samsung YEPP-M1 will have an AMOLED display
Sep 27th
Samsung are all set to unleash their later media player called the YEPP-M1. So what’s the big deal? These guys do this kind of thing every now and then. Well, the catch is that this PMP will have a 3.3 inch AMOLED and will support many formats like MPEG4, Xvid, WMV and many more. It will also have FM, stereo playback from speakers, T-DMB technology and Samsung’s very own DNSe 3.0 technology. Memory: 8 GB.
With a waistline of just 9.9 mm, the Samsung YEPP-M1 is totally hot. And well, (I love doing this with sadistic pleasure) it will be available in Korea for 299,000 KRW (~$252). The 16 and 32 GB versions are expected in the future.

all in new JVC Picsio GC-FM 1 camcorder has HD support
Sep 27th
Thanks to the great brainwave that hit JVC hard enough to come out with a design like that of the Picsio GC-FM. The design is totally cool and off-bling. Away from the looks, it’s a total winner with an 8-megapixel shooter and support for HD video capture.
A pity is the missing internal memory. It directly records onto the SDHC card. No one says no to something so cool and flash that’s capable of capturing H.264 videos with image stabilization and 96 minutes of non-stop shooting.
What matters is that the JVC Picsio GC-Fm 1 is one hell of a camcorder for the flashy ones. So if you’ve got your head in the 80’s you can easily pick this one out without an ounce of afterthought needed.

Apple geared up to include Blu-ray for new iMacs
Sep 27th
Apple is all set to start a new line of its iMac desktops which will integrate a Blu-ray player for high definition media lovers. Apple has so far stayed away from the media war between the two competing formats, and even though it’s been little over a year since the war has been won by Blu-ray, the format is still ignored by Apple. The Apple netbook Air didn’t feature any optical drive, which is indicative of the industry all geared up for a HDD based media platform for the future.
Apple is quiet about the whole rumor as of yet but if they are to be believed then there are talks of better processors, graphics and HDD space above 1TB. The company has yet to offer Blu-ray as a standard or build-to-order option, but a few third party companies have been quietly testing the waters and marketing external Blu-ray burners to Mac users.

Head examined: MRI like you’ve never seen it
Sep 26th
Here’s a guy who wants to give you a look at exactly what’s going on inside his head. Literally. After he had his brain scanned to rule out a couple of conditions, Bill Moorier was relieved to find out nothing was wrong. But then, armed with a stack of MRI images, he figured he might as well do something interesting with them. How about an interactive MRI viewer?
The result is amazing. Go to his site, click/drag your mouse up and down or across his face, and wherever the crosshairs are located, that’s where you’re looking inside his head. It’s a brilliant Flash programming exercise, making us hope that maybe someday all MRIs will be presented this way, and accessible on the web.

Microsoft’s Ballmer: ’3 screens and the cloud’
Sep 26th
Where is Microsoft going with Zune HD and its vaunted three-screen idea? Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer talked with TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington, where he supported most of our assertions in our latest SHIFT commentary. Thanks for that, Steve. Good timing.
He’s talking about computing from tiny, mid-sized and a very big screens — all of them integrated with online connectivity (the cloud) — and he’s calling Microsoft’s computing-everywhere strategy a “fundamental shift in the computing paradigm.”
Ballmer talks about a variety of ways to interact with these various pacecodes, including touch, voice, cameras, and gestures, and says Microsoft’s goal is “one integrated computing infrastructure.” Surprisingly, he says that huge interconnected system doesn’t even have to all come from Microsoft. So much for the evil empire? We’ll see about that.
On the other hand, if Ballmer’s leveling with us, don’t expect a Microsoft-branded phone or our prediction about Microsoft’s “zPhone” interacting with all those screens to come true anytime soon. He denies Microsoft is in the midst of building its own phone. One thing’s for sure, though: The Zune HD is just the beginning.

StressWatch, the 21st-century Mood Ring?
Sep 26th
Don’t wear your heart on your sleeve, wear it on your wrist with the StressWatch. This attractive design concept gathers heart rate and body temperature data and then interprets them as levels of stress on its multicolored screen. It’s like wearing a lie detector on your wrist.
The black bar graph at the bottom of the watch is the stress line, and if the colors on the watch face are cool greens and blues, you’re pretty laid back. If they turn into hot pink, red or orange, look out.
Why would you want to publicly display stress levels? The idea is not to be a stress exhibitionist, but to remind you to slow down your breathing and use visual biofeedback to calm yourself down. Like most other stress-relieving potions, elixers and pacecodes, this could be pure woo-woo hooey. Nice watch, though. More pics:
Bravo Gustavo iPhone app lets you flail your phone around like a pro
Sep 26th
Bravo Gustavo is the new iPhone App from the LA Philharmonic. Think of it like Guitar Hero, but for conductors, and using your phone. Yes, that means you flail your iPhone around like a conductor’s baton, hoping it doesn’t slip through your hands. Just like LA Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel! He’s dreamy.
